UTB to Shut Down Unlicensed Accommodation Facilities Starting November 2024

The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has issued a press release today, October 18, 2024, informing accommodation owners and managers that, in collaboration with the Uganda Police, they will begin closing down facilities operating without a valid tourism license effective, November 18, 2024.

This initiative is aimed at maintaining high standards within the hospitality sector, ensuring that all establishments meet the required regulations.

The UTB emphasizes that this move is part of its broader efforts to enhance Uganda’s appeal as a top tourism destination, promoting safety, quality, and professionalism across the industry. The crackdown will start immediately, with inspections taking place countrywide.

TO ALL ACCOMMODATION OWNERS AND MANAGERS

Closure of Unlicensed Accommodation Facilities

The Uganda Tourism Act of 2008 requires that all accommodation facilities in Uganda must be licensed by Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) to operate. Starting 18th November 2024, UTB in partnership with Uganda Police will close accommodation facilities without a tourism operating license.

The accommodation facilities are categorized as; Hotel, Lodges, Guest houses, Motels, Inns, Serviced apartments, Cottages, Villas, Hostels, Tenanted camps, and Farm houses.

To avoid closure, all accommodation facilities are required to register with UTB and obtain a tourism operating license.
