Elena Camp Officially Handed Over to Mt. Rwenzori National Park

Rwenzori Mountain National Park, Uganda—Yesterday marked a significant milestone for tourism in Uganda as the newly constructed Elena Camp, located 4,500 meters above sea level, was officially handed over to the park authorities. The project, funded by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, is set to revolutionize the trekking experience in the Rwenzori Mountains.

Elena Camp is now fully operational and boasts state-of-the-art facilities designed to enhance both comfort and safety for mountaineers. The camp offers a bed capacity of 34 for tourists and 36 for support staff, ensuring ample space for large trekking groups. Additionally, it features a dining room, a fully equipped kitchen, and storage facilities. Essential utilities, including a steady water supply and reliable power, have been installed, and the camp is fully furnished with beds and mattresses to provide much-needed rest for adventurers.

The Other equipment provided to Mountain Rwenzori National Park

In a bid to prioritize safety for trekkers exploring the Rwenzori Mountains, the Ministry also handed over a comprehensive suite of modern mountaineering and hiking equipment. This gear includes:

  1. Static and dynamic ropes
  2. Crampons and ice axes
  3. Ice cleats
  4. Modern rescue stretchers
  5. Oxygen bags
  6. Carabiner clips
  7. Ascenders and Figure 8 devices
  8. Bi-layers and specialized cameras

This equipment is expected to significantly improve rescue operations and ensure a safer hiking experience for visitors scaling the challenging terrain of the Rwenzori Mountains.

The Renovation of Elena Camp a Great Boost to Ugandan Tourism

The launch of Elena Camp aligns with Uganda’s broader strategy to boost tourism by enhancing infrastructure in key natural attractions. As one of Africa’s most iconic mountain ranges, the Rwenzori Mountains—also known as the “Mountains of the Moon”—offer a unique blend of breathtaking scenery, rich biodiversity, and challenging trekking routes.
